Flowers of Israel: Anemone

A red anemone

Every winter Israel gets on average ~20 inches of rain across the country (up to ~45 inches in the north).

Once the rainy season starts, the landscape is slowly covered with wildflowers.

One of the most impressive wildflowers that appears during this time is the anemone, or callanit (כלנית) in Hebrew.

Since 2012, it has been the national flower of Israel (before that it was the cyclamen) and there are festivals to celebrate the bloom each year.

Thousands of people flock to fields in the south in an event called Dorom Adom (דרום אדום) in Hebrew (Red South).

Blooming in a variety of colors

You can find fields of flowers everwhere you travel, and they come in a variety of colors: red, white, purple, and pink.

The red flowers are generally the most common and can take over landscapes.

It's exciting to watch as the fields get thicker and the flowers grow taller after a heavy rain and sunny day.

Here's some more of my favorite photos from the 2022-23 season.
