Flowers of Israel: Cyclamen

Cyclamen in the sun

Every winter Israel gets on average ~20 inches of rain across the country (up to ~45 inches in the north).

Once the rainy season starts, the landscape is slowly covered with wildflowers.

One of the most prevalent wildflowers that appears during this time is the cyclamen, or rekefet (רקפת) in Hebrew.

White and pink cyclamen

Their broad green leaves start to appear right after the first rains.

Early in the season they start to cover landscapes, especially near trees and in forests.

They can also be seen growing directly out of rocks.

The flowers can last several months and can be found in different mixes of white and pink.

Here's some more of my favorite photos from the 2022-23 season.
